Income Tax India (FY 2025-26): Old vs New Regime
The slab-by-slab breakdown that makes choosing between regimes easy.
Every year the same question appears: old regime or new? The answer depends on your income, deductions and how much you save. Here's the FY 2025-26 comparison you can actually use.
New regime slabs (FY 2025-26)
| Income slab | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4,00,000 | Nil |
| ₹4–8 lakh | 5% |
| ₹8–12 lakh | 10% |
| ₹12–16 lakh | 15% |
| ₹16–20 lakh | 20% |
| ₹20–24 lakh | 25% |
| Above ₹24 lakh | 30% |
Who wins with which regime?
- Low deductions (no HRA, 80C below ₹1.5L) → new regime is usually better.
- High deductions (80C, HRA, NPS, home loan) → old regime may win.
- Sallied employees: compare after the standard deduction in both.
